The #StopTheSanctions International Campaign is a call to end the criminal sanctions that the United States executes illegally and inhumanely against Iran, Yemen, Palestine, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, and against all the countries punished by these measures, in times of COVID-19 and post pandemic.
For decades, these countries have been the subject of government change agendas by the United States and its allies, where sanctions are used as an unconventional weapon of war against innocent people.
Through these measures of economic terror, the United States prevents the importation of medical equipment, medicines, or food, and although its government denies it, humanitarian exemptions do not work. Although the UNSC may grant exemptions for humanitarian aid, this mechanism prevents humanitarian organizations from delivering the necessary items, such as emergency medical equipment, medicines, etc.
Syria faces a 9-year imposed war of devastating consequences and already presents its first confirmed COVID-19 cases. In the Arab country, it is practically impossible to acquire medicines, since most pharmaceutical companies and foreign banks avoid transactions for fear of being sanctioned by the United States. This happens with the criminal complicity of the European Union and Canada, that have imposed sanctions against Syria, also, in addition to prohibiting the way of humanitarian aid ships.
In the Islamic Republic, people suffering from diseases such as cancer and diabetes, who need specific medication to survive, and which can only be obtained abroad, die due to sanctions that make it difficult to import them or make them unpayable. In this case, too, companies concerned that they may break the law or be penalized for violating US sanctions, refuse to sell Iranian products that are not on the sanctions list. Added to this scenario is COVID-19, in wich Iran has registered 73 thousand 303 confirmed cases, while the death toll is 4 thousand 585. Despite the sanctions, Iran has more people recovered than deceased than in the United States and Europe.
Palestine has the first cases confirmed by the Ministry of Health in Gaza. The Zionist entity is supported by the United States in the permanent siege, the sale of arms, and is complicit with Zionism in making for more than 2 million Palestinians living in overcrowded areas in the largest open-air concentration camp worlwide, to access a decent life. Washington has also sanctioned the Hamas government in Gaza since it was first elected. So, if COVID-19 continues to increase, the consequences could be devastating due to the high level of population, the blockade of medicines and the lack of respirators, since it only has 60 of these, for a population of 2 million inhabitants.
In Yemen, the United States annihilated the health care system with the military and economic imposed war in complicity with Saudi Arabia, bombing hospitals, roads and schools, and subjecting the oppressed Yemeni people to suffer «the worst famine of the 21st century» where 8 Millions of people starve and die of cholera or bombardment. It has also systematically blocked humanitarian aid ships with food and medicine.
For its part, Cuba, which has suffered from the US embargo for 60 years, and although this has not prevented it from implementing an advanced health system and assisting other countries in times of pandemic, it already has more than 200 cases of COVID-19 Therefore, the sanctions of the last year that Washington imposed against the oil companies that transport oil to Cuba from Venezuela, will also impact in facing this pandemic.
Similarly, is the case of Venezuela. Not only are the United States sanctions killing thousands of patients unable to access the necessary medication, but they also violate the right to life of millions of people, by sanctioning the Venezuelan food distribution program that reaches 6 million households or more than 60% of the population. As indicated by figures taken from the American Center for Economic and Political Research in Washington, it is calculated that due to the boycott, the death rate increased by 31% from 2017 to 2018. In relation to COVID-19, there have been 814 confirmed cases, therefore, these illegal and inhumane measures add to this collective punishment.
As we can see, what the United States maintains is absolutely false, when it ensures that the sanctions are applied to the governments of those countries only, since they also target medicines, food and medical equipment. Or, when it says that humanitarian exemptions are working, since Washington blocks this system and the UN itself has condemned and demanded their relief.
From majdi along with other social organizations worldwide, we demand respect for the life and sovereignty of nations, and we make a strong call to take action, to denounce this network of horror and global oppression, to write to politicians, foreign ministries, media and organizations in each country, and thus increase pressure against the United States to immediately end this collective massacre. Our inaction is not an option.
For the immediate cessation of sanctions, join today.
